Investigation underway after man’s death on West Miracle Mile | Top Stories

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A man died after harming himself with a sharp object while officers tried to stop him from throwing rocks at cars on West Miracle Mile.

Officers responded to a 911 call about an individual throwing rocks at passing cars in the 1000 block of West Miracle Mile around 7 p.m. on April 4. When they arrived, they found a man in the roadway.

The man pulled out a sharp object and began to harm himself. Officers used less-lethal devices to try to stop him, but they were unsuccessful.

The man ran toward a nearby business. Officers positioned themselves to keep him from entering the business and deployed additional less-lethal devices, which subdued him.

Officers immediately gave first aid until Tucson Fire Department arrived and took the man to a local hospital. Despite lifesaving measures, he died from his injuries.

The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team has been activated to handle the criminal investigation. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is the lead investigating agency.

The Tucson Police Department will conduct a separate investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred. All findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
