PHOENIX — Get ready for a windy weekend with falling temperatures
A storm system passing to our north will drop temperatures out of the triple digits while increasing winds and fire danger across Arizona this weekend.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect through much of the weekend for northeast, eastern, and southeastern Arizona. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph, with very low relative humidity between 5% and 15%.
Wildfire prevention starts with small choices. One major risk is dragging chains from trailers or equipment, which can scrape pavement and spark dry grass in seconds. Always secure chains before driving.
Also, avoid parking on dry vegetation, properly dispose of cigarettes, and never leave a fire unattended. In hot, windy conditions, it only takes one spark.
A High Wind Warning is in effect Sunday for northwestern Arizona in Mohave County, where gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected. That will create dangerous driving conditions for high-profile vehicles, along with blowing dust.
Behind the system, temperatures ease slightly. Phoenix will top out in the upper 90s Saturday with lows in the 70s, then drop into the mid-90s Sunday and near 90 by Monday. Valley wind gusts will reach 25 to 35 mph.
The drop in temperatures will be short-lived as high climb back into the upper 90s after mid next week.
