The future of Old Tucson Studios as operator plans to leave | Local News

TUCSON, Ariz. — The future of Old Tucson Studios is under discussion after its current operator, American Heritage Railways, informed Pima County that it does not intend to exercise an option to extend its lease beyond April 2027.

American Heritage Railways, which operates the historic western-themed attraction at 201 S. Kinney Road, has indicated it will not move forward with the 10-year lease extension outlined in its current agreement with the county. Despite that decision, county officials say discussions are ongoing and both sides remain committed to finding a path forward.

In a memo to the Pima County Board of Supervisors, County Administrator Jan Lesher said the county and American Heritage Railways share a strong commitment to Old Tucson’s future.

“Both Pima County and American Heritage Railways share a deep and genuine appreciation for Old Tucson, and we remain committed to working collaboratively to determine the best path for its continued success,” Lesher wrote.

County officials emphasized that there are no immediate changes to operations at the attraction. Old Tucson remains open to the public, and all scheduled tours, events and activities are continuing as planned.

“We’ve met with them and are working to see how we can move forward,” said Diane Frisch, director of Pima County Attractions & Tourism. “The bottom line is they love Old Tucson, and we love Old Tucson.”

Popular seasonal events, including the Halloween-themed Nightfall festival and the Yuletide holiday celebration, will continue as scheduled. County leaders are encouraging residents and visitors to continue supporting the attraction by attending its events and exploring its offerings, which include Ghost Tours, Summer Night Markets and studio tours.

County staff said they will continue focusing on the broader public interest in preserving and enhancing Old Tucson as discussions continue.
