FORECAST: Extreme Heat Warning

PHOENIX — High pressure remains firmly in control across the Desert Southwest, sending Valley temperatures soaring above 110 degrees.

An Extreme Heat Warning will stay in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday, making it another ABC15 Weather Action Day — a reminder to take precautions during this dangerous stretch of heat.

Be sure to stay hydrated and limit time outdoors between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., when temperatures peak. Bring pets inside during the hottest part of the day, and if you must be outside, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

Heat alerts also remain in place across parts of southwestern and southeastern Arizona.

Looking ahead, monsoon activity will taper off into the weekend as drier air moves in, along with stronger winds. Those conditions will increase fire danger across the state.

Red Flag Warnings are in effect Friday through Sunday for northern, northeastern, central and western Arizona, where wind gusts could exceed 50 mph.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Avoid tossing cigarettes from vehicles and check that nothing is dragging from your car that could spark a fire.

The gusty winds will also bring some relief from the extreme heat. Valley temperatures are expected to fall back into the low 100s by the end of the weekend.
