TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – Tucson police confirmed a deadly shooting outside a gay bar early Monday morning was a hate crime.
Detectives say there was no apparent connection between the suspect, 44-year-old Ousman Ceesay, and the two victims. Evidence recovered from a search of Ceesay’s home included a note indicating the shooting was a targeted attack motivated by hate toward the LGBTQ+ community.
TPD says they’re continuing to work with local businesses and community groups to provide support. A vigil continues to grow in front of Venture N as the community remembers the two victims, Vincent Siqueiros and Cameron Capara.
“Cameron was just this incredibly caring person and we discovered that we have a lot in common,” said Tamara Jenney. “We ended up collaborating a lot on different projects. He was just an incredible photographer and videographer.”
Jenney says she’s been friends with Capara for eight years. She shared her thoughts when she found out what happened.
“I felt like I wanted a big hug from Cameron and I wasn’t going to get that again,” Jenney said. “He was always just someone who was there with a big smile and a hug and he was always there for everyone when they needed something. The impact is just immense that he brought to our community.”
News 4 Tucson also spoke to a friend of Siqueiros, Tim Gordon.
“A very loving soul,” Gordon said. “Everybody knows him because he lit up the room when you were in a room or even outside with him. You felt comfort with him being there because he was a very special soul.”
Gordon says he is heartbroken after the loss of his friend.
“Having a friend that no longer will be here, it really hurts everybody’s heart,” Gordon said. “And my heart is just really hurting from the horrific way that he passed away.”
As the vigil continues to grow, another is planned for Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Catalina Park. Venture N staff have also decided to reopen the bar Wednesday at 4 p.m.
