Phoenix Pride events take over Valley bars this weekend

The Pride parade will take place on Sunday, but Valley bars and restaurants are celebrating all weekend.

Phoenix Pride returns for one day only this year. The parade will make its way through downtown Phoenix starting at 10 a.m. on Sunday. That means there’s plenty of time to celebrate before and after the event.

Local bars and restaurants have scheduled a full weekend of festivities, with Pride-themed events and activities including a brunch and bike ride, a block party, a chicken wing-eating contest and plenty of drink specials.

Here’s where to kick off the weekend, and keep the fun going long after the parade crosses the finish line.

Boycott Bar

4301 N. Seventh Ave.
The Valley’s only lesbian bar is getting the party going on Saturday night with its Phoenix Pride Party. The Melrose District bar’s event starts at 8 p.m. and will run all night, with dancing encouraged. Tickets for Boycott’s party are $14.52 and can be purchased online.

There’s always a party at Charlie’s.

Charlie’s

727 W. Camelback Road
If you’re looking to dance all weekend, Charlie’s has you covered. The Camelback Road staple has DJs every night through Sunday. On Saturday, the bar will open early for a special Pride drag brunch hosted by Claudia B. with proceeds benefitting the Phoenix Animal Care Coalition. Tickets can be bought online individually or by the table, and include a continental buffet.

747 W. Van Buren St.
While not a designated gay bar, downtown Phoenix nightclub Club Contact is joining the Pride fun this weekend with a Saturday daytime party. The Queergrxl Phoenix Pride event will run from 3 to 8:30 p.m. and feature DJs, vendors, go-go dancers, burlesque performances and fun all afternoon. Tickets are $14.64 and can be purchased online.

Kobalt

3110 N. Central Ave., #175
Kobalt is taking over the block for its Pre-Pride Extravaganza. The party kicks off at 2 p.m. on Saturday and will fill the midtown bar and a large patio expansion for an indoor and outdoor party. Expect an outdoor stage, live DJs, drag performances, go-go dancers, food trucks, vendors, activations and headliner Alyssa Edwards. The party goes all night, until 2 a.m. Tickets are $35 and can be purchased online.

Pat O’s Bunkhouse Saloon

4428 N. Seventh Ave.
On Saturday night, from 8 p.m. to midnight, Pat O’s Bunkhouse Saloon and Encounters Phoenix are hosting a Pride party with music from DJs Jack Daddy Dave and Danny G. The event is free and 21+.

On Saturday, The Royale is hosting the Big Gay Brunch and Bike Ride, which will kick off a Melrose District bar crawl. Start with brunch at Royale Kitchen before hitting the route on two wheels. On Sunday, the restaurant will host a special Pride-edition drag brunch with Barbra Seville, starting at 11 a.m. Tickets for the bar crawl and brunch are available online. And from 1 to 6 p.m., there will be a free Sunday Funday tea dance with drink specials and a DJ.

Sazerac

The new route of the Phoenix Pride Parade will bring the colorful floats right by downtown Phoenix bar Sazerac. So, the typically nightlife-focused spot is opening early. To celebrate and give parade viewers somewhere to grab a drink, Sazerac will open at 10 a.m.

Title 9 Sports Grill

4221 N. Seventh Ave.
The Melrose District women’s sports bar, Title 9, has events taking place all day on Saturday. Pride @ Melrose Brunch will take over from 10:30 a.m. onward with a drag and burlesque show starting at 11 a.m. Tickets are $15 and available online. Then a little later in the day, Title 9 will host a party from noon until 6 p.m. The free, family-friendly event will include a community stage, food and crafts vendors, plus face painting and a bounce house for kids. At 2 p.m., the bar will host a chicken wing-eating contest with a $500 prize.
