PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. (KVOA) – A 38-year-old man is dead after his vehicle veered off the road and landed on top of a boulder. According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash along East Benson Highway.
Deputies from the San Xavier District arrived at the scene in the 3300 block of East Benson Highway just after 2:10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24. Upon arrival, first responders observed a single vehicle that had come to rest directly on top of a boulder.
Deputies searched the vehicle and located an unresponsive male driver inside. Investigators confirmed he was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Emergency medical personnel transported the driver to a local hospital in life-threatening condition. Doctors later pronounced him deceased at the hospital. Authorities have since identified the driver as 38-year-old Kodi Roy Payne.
The initial investigation suggests that Payne was traveling eastbound on Benson Highway when he veered off the roadway. Investigators believe the crash may have occurred as a result of a sudden medical incident.
Sheriff’s deputies report that it is currently unknown if impairment was a factor in the crash. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the incident.
