Aggravated assault suspect dead in police shooting in Tempe, officials say

TEMPE, AZ — A man is dead after a Chandler police officer shot him during an attempted arrest Friday evening in Tempe, according to the Chandler Police Department.

Officials say it happened near Scottsdale and McKellips roads.

Chandler police said detectives were in Tempe around 8 p.m. to arrest a suspect wanted in connection with an aggravated assault that happened in Chandler about two weeks earlier.

According to police, officers tried to arrest a man, identified by police as 40-year-old Christoffer Vink, near Scottsdale and McKellips roads when he ran into an apartment complex.

During the foot pursuit, Chandler police said Vink displayed a firearm, prompting an officer-involved shooting.

Officers provided medical aid, but Vink was pronounced dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene by firefighters, according to police.

Police say no officers were injured and there is no danger to the public.

Traffic restrictions were in place in the area.

This is one of two officer-involved shootings in less than 24 hours in the Valley.

A homicide investigation in Mesa ended with an officer-involved shooting early Saturday after police say the suspect fired at officers during a standoff near Dobson and Broadway roads.
