Mesa PD: Teen found hiding in trash can after running from officers

MESA, Ariz. — A teen was arrested after he was found hiding in a trash can after running from officers, according to the Mesa Police Department. 

On Monday, just before midnight, officers saw several people at Wittman Park after hours.

When officers turned on their lights, Lorenzo Williams, 18, ran away.

Williams ran into a fenced alleyway and threw his backpack over a wall before climbing the fence, officers said. 

A drone and a helicopter were used to track Williams as he hid in a trash can. 

The helicopter’s infrared technology was used to confirm that Williams was in the trash can.

Officers created a perimeter, and Williams was arrested. 

When officers located the backpack Williams had left behind, they found a handgun nearby. 

Williams was booked in jail on charges of possession of a deadly weapon if the person is under 21 years old, failure to obey a police officer, trespassing, possession of marijuana for sale, and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony.
