19-year-old Trevon Williams will be booked into the San Diego County Jail for murder, officials said.
SAN DIEGO, California — A pregnant 17-year-old girl visiting from Phoenix was shot and killed early Saturday in San Diego, while her newborn remains in critical condition, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Officers responded around 1:10 a.m. May 30, to reports of a shooting in the 4900 block of Gardena Avenue. When they arrived, they found the teen suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was about 32 weeks pregnant and was found unresponsive.
Police said officers began life-saving efforts at the scene before paramedics took her to a hospital, where doctors performed an emergency cesarean section. The baby survived but remains in critical condition. The mother later died at the hospital. Police said the victim has been identified but won’t be publicly identified at this time.
Investigators say the teen and several family members were visiting San Diego from Arizona and staying at a short-term rental. Her 19-year-old boyfriend, also from Arizona, reportedly met her outside the rental and shot her before fleeing on foot.
Officers later found the suspect, identified as Trevon Williams, around 3 a.m. near September Street, where he was taken into custody without incident. A semi-automatic handgun was recovered.
Williams is expected to be booked into San Diego County Jail on a murder charge. Detectives continue to investigate and are interviewing witnesses.
Police said both the victim and suspect are from Phoenix.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Diego Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
