Biggs coasts to primary victory, looks to showdown in the fall with Hobbs | Top Stories

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (KVOA) – The Associated Press called the Republican race for Governor in Arizona just after 8 p.m., Tuesday night. Rep. Andy Biggs of the East Valley won decisively, garnering more than 70% of the vote over his closest challenger, Rep. David Schweikert of Fountain Hills.

Biggs will face Democratic incumbent Governor Katie Hobbs this fall in the marquee statewide political contest of the 2026 Midterm cycle.

Biggs was supposed to be at his election night watch party in Scottsdale several hours before he appeared on stage. He was out of state most of the day Tuesday, attending a meeting with the Republican Governors Association. He ran into significant travel delays getting home.

He spoke to a group of supporters just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night and urged Arizona Republicans who did not support his primary campaign to unite in the fall.

“Come together,” Biggs said. “Come together. I feel like John Lennon.”

Gov. Hobbs says she and her team have been preparing for her reelection for more than a year.

“Building the support we need to win,” Hobbs said. “I’m not taking a single vote for granted. Most voters aren’t tuning in yet and so I’m confident we’re running the campaign I need to win.”

Affordability and the cost of living will be big issues on the campaign trail.

Hobbs argues Biggs is out of touch with what Arizonans want.

“The cost hikes we’re seeing are a result of Washington’s agenda and tariffs and the war in Iran,” she said. “They’re seeing costs go up everywhere from the grocery store, the gas station, doctors’ offices and anywhere in between. Andy Biggs, every chance he had, to not support that agenda, he has taken the opposite approach, supported that agenda above Arizonans.”

“When she came into office we weren’t in the bottom tier of affordable states we were in the top tier of most affordable states,” Biggs said Tuesday night. “And, none of this stuff that she’s claiming is affecting it, was affecting it when she was dropping us into that position. So, I think she owns it. She needs to own it.”

For the first time in Arizona history, the party nominees will choose a running mate to serve as their Lieutenant Governor. That choice is expected in the coming weeks.

Election Day in the fall is Tuesday Nov. 3. Early ballots will go out in October.
