SigEp, Phi Delt latest U of A fraternities hit with probation | News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The University of Arizona has placed two more fraternities on probation after investigations that began this spring.

The U of A placed Sigma Phi Epsilon on probation Wednesday after notifying Phi Delta Theta it was on probation last month. Five of the university’s 30 fraternities now hold that status.

“It’s not surprising to be honest,” a former student who wishes to go by “June” told News 4 Tucson.

The Dean of Students Office found it was “more likely than not that” Sigma Phi Epsilon violated several code of conduct standards for alcohol, hazing, endangerment and other rules.

“SigEp exists to build balanced men through a no-pledging, no-hazing member experience in a substance-free environment,” he chapter’s headquarters wrote in part. “Together, the University of Arizona, chapter volunteers, undergraduate leaders, and SigEp Headquarters have taken appropriate steps to strengthen accountability and position Arizona Beta for long-term success. We appreciate the partnership that made this work possible and remain committed to ensuring the chapter provides a safe, values-based experience that positively contributes to the university community.”

The University of Arizona also determined it was “more likely than not that” members of Phi Delta Theta violated code of conduct policies involving alcohol, hazing and endangerment. News 4 Tucson reached out to Phi Delta Theta for comment but has not heard back.

Efforts to knock on the fraternity’s door also went unanswered.

Both fraternities now face penalties including thousands of dollars in fines, a scheduled hazing workshop and probation through May of next year. Future violations while on probation could result in the chapters no longer being recognized by the U of A.

“June,” the former student believes there needs to be a culture shift with fraternities on campus.

“Yes, but will that happen? I don’t think so,” she said. “I think a lot of these students are given just a slap on the wrist and allowed to continue with their behavior, unless it progresses enough that enough people notify high authorities, that some change happens.”

The University of Arizona’s Dean of Students Office placed fraternities Sigma Chi and Sigma Alpha Mu on “interim loss of recognition” this spring. That status has been dismissed for Sigma Chi following a U of A investigation. The Dean of Students Office continues to look into alleged misconduct at Sigma Alpha Mu.

News 4 Tucson asked a U of A spokesperson if they wished to comment on the fact there are now five fraternities on probation but has not heard back.
