Belgium to challenge FIFA decision over key U.S. Men’s soccer player | News

SEATTLE (AP) – The Belgian soccer federation is demanding an explanation from FIFA about a decision to let U.S. forward Folarin Balogun play at the World Cup despite getting a red card in his previous game.

Belgium takes on the United States later for a spot in the quarterfinals. The match will determine which team advances in the tournament.

The Belgian federation said it has still not received either “FIFA’s decision or any explanation regarding this matter.” The federation added it “has no choice but to challenge the player’s eligibility for the upcoming match.”

Balogun received a red card in his previous World Cup game. Red cards typically result in automatic suspensions for the following match.

FIFA has not publicly commented on the decision. The governing body has not provided clarification to Belgium about why Balogun is eligible to play.
