Tucson Police search for driver involved in fatal hit-and-run | Local News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The Tucson Police Department is searching for the driver who hit and killed a 56-year-old pedestrian early Monday morning.

On May 11 at 12:37 a.m., an Operations Division South officer was patrolling the area of 12th Avenue near West District Street when they discovered Luis Eduardo Garcia, 56, lying in the roadway. The officer provided aid to the pedestrian as the Tucson Fire Department responded, but Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to TPD, detectives determined that Garcia was attempting to cross 12th Avenue south of West District Street when he was hit by a vehicle traveling northbound. The vehicle was traveling above the 35-mile-per-hour speed limit.

Garcia was not in a marked or implied crosswalk when he was hit. An implied crosswalk with posted pedestrian warning signs was located around 60 feet north of the fatal crash location.

The driver left the scene without stopping to render aid.

Tucson Police said Garcia’s jaywalking and the vehicle’s speed were the major contributing factors of the crash.

“The primary focus of the investigation at this time is to identify and locate the associated vehicle and driver that fled the scene of the collision,” TPD said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has additional information is urged to contact 911 or call 88-CRIME where they can remain anonymous.
